King’s Meadow Campaign have fought to save King’s Meadow Open- Air Baths from the bulldozers. These beautiful Edwardian Baths built in 1902 and opened in 1903 are situated alongside our lovely riverside. The Campaign first started 7 years ago and in 2004 Campaigners secured a Grade II English Heritage Listing on the Baths. With many “ups” and “downs” we have fought off another threat of development, our precious Meadow succombing to becoming yet another concrete jungle, car parks, hotel, purely as Commercial Enterprise, snatching away the 14 acres of the Meadow from the People of Reading, which rightfully belongs to them.
We have 2 years to achieve our goal being: Restoration of the Baths as an All Year Facility – Summer Swimming and Winter Exhibitions, (arena, ice-skating functions, private hire) plus a Pavilion including refurbishment of new changing facilities for users of the Meadow e.g. the footballers and other sports users, meeting rooms, function rooms, cafe/restaurant rooms. Fundraising initiatives have started in earnest and all information will be found on the new website. Please read about our achievements, goals, past history of the pool, the present and the future. Join in! and if you’d like to register a brick for £1 please be our guests!
